How to Prepare Your UTV for Winter Weather
With the summer heat still lingering, it’s hard to imagine that winter is on its way. But cooler conditions will be here before we know it! It’s important to ensure your UTV is equipped for the change in seasons, so you’re ready for adventure whether the forecast features snow or sunshine.
UTVs are most commonly used for work during the winter months, helping plow snow off the driveway or hauling wood for the fireplace. When properly equipped with the right tires or tracks, there are also plenty of recreational uses as well – especially since many trails remain open throughout the winter. Read on to learn more, then stop by your local powersports dealer to find your new ride!
How to Winterize Your UTV
Here are some tips to prepare your UTV for cold conditions:
- Find a safe storage location.
Store your UTV somewhere that shields it from the elements. We also recommend covering it up to provide extra protection. - Change the oil and filter.
Changing your oil every 50 miles or so helps optimize performance. Simply swap out the oil and filter, then start the engine after. - Clear the air filter.
Switch the old air filter with a new one and inspect the air intake. If there’s any debris, clear it out and wipe down the inside of the filter housing. - Check the brake and transmission fluid.
Top off your fluid levels and refill as needed. - Invest in snow tires.
Whether at work or play, riding on the right tires is key for maximizing traction – and safety too! - Add winter UTV accessories
UTVs make efficient snowplows, so many riders add a snow plow attachment. Other winter attachments include V-shaped plows, snow blades, snow blowers, and sweepers.
Tips for the First Ride of the Season
Be sure to perform the maintenance detailed above before winter arrives. Once it's here, keep these tips for the season’s first ride in mind:
- Start slow.
Give the engine a few minutes to warm up to prevent any damage. Give yourself a little time to get reacquainted with driving in different conditions as well, especially if you’re traversing icy or snowy terrain. - Dress appropriately.
Wear layers and thick, protective boots. You may also want to invest in UTV accessories, like heated hand grips and wind deflecting handlebars. Stashing an extra blanket or pair of gloves isn’t a bad idea either. - Bring water.
Avoid dehydration by bringing plenty of water along for the ride. - Never ride alone.
If possible, always ride with a buddy. An unexpected injury or vehicle malfunction can be especially dangerous if you’re stranded in wintery conditions.
