Should You Store Your Polaris Slingshot for the Winter Season?

Oct. 31 2023 Polaris Slingshot By Redline Power Sports

Behind the wheel of your Polaris Slingshot, every open road becomes an opportunity – for exploring, for excitement, for epic adventure. With a low center of gravity and three traction-boosting wheels, these powerful machines are sure to fuel the fun. But because the open-air cockpit leaves riders exposed to the elements, many prefer to hang up their helmets during the winter and await spring’s return.

If you plan to store your Polaris Slingshot for 60 days or more, winterization is key. By performing some simple steps, you’ll prevent damage to the following – and be ready to ride as soon as the weather warms!

  • Engine
  • Fuel system
  • Tires
  • Electrical system
  • Battery
  • Suspension system

How to Winterize Your Polaris Slingshot for Storage

Here’s what you need to know about preparing your powersports vehicle for winter’s harsher weather:

Step 1: Thoroughly clean your machine.
Giving your Polaris Slingshot a thorough wash and wax, paying extra attention to the chassis, upholstery and plastic components. This removes salt or any other materials that can cause corrosion or rust, and preserves your Slingshot’s condition all winter long.

Step 2: Change the oil.
Change the engine oil, and when you’re finished, allow the engine to run so that the fresh oil circulates throughout. You may consider additives as well.

Step 3:  Fog the engine.
Fog the engine using the recommended aerosol fogging oil, If you’re not sure which product to choose, our Service Department’s certified technicians can help.

Step 4: Remove the battery.
To prevent your battery from draining, remove it and attach it to a battery tender.

Step 5: Check tire pressure and inflate if needed.
You may need to add air to your powersports vehicle’s tires to ensure it maintains the recommended pressure even while sitting stationary.

Step 6: Add a fuel stabilizer.
If you skip the stabilizer, we recommend draining the gas from the fuel tank, fuel lines, and fuel rail before storing your Polaris Slingshot for the winter.

Step 7: Remove, treat, and reinstall the spark plugs.
Spray a light amount of engine fogging oil into each cylinder to prevent rust before reinstalling.

Step 8: Check coolant quality.
Make sure the coolant meets quality and level standards to prevent freezing in cold weather.

Step 9: Apply a metal protectant.
Putting a metal protectant on shock absorber shafts and other exposed metal components can help prevent corrosion – and costly repairs!

Step 10: Cover intake and exhaust openings.
This keeps unwanted guests, like small rodents, from taking up residence during the winter!

Step 11: Elevate the vehicle.
Use jack stands to raise your vehicle above the ground, and remove the wheels to prevent flat tires.

Step 12: Choose the right storage location.
Be sure to store your powersports vehicle in a clean, dry, well-ventilated area like a garage. Choose a spot that’s away from direct sunlight, where temperatures will remain relatively consistent throughout the season.

Step 13: Cover your vehicle.
Use a fabric cover specifically designed to fit your Polaris Slingshot. Plastic or vinyl covers trap rust-causing moisture, and are therefore not recommended.
